2016 Cloud9 new block blog hop {raspberry swirl quilt block tutorial}

Welcome to the very first day of the 2016 Cloud9 New Block Blog hop! This blog hop is being sponsored by Cloud9 Fabrics and features a bundle of their organic Cirrus Solids – this amazingly gorgeous and oh, so soft “Berry Harvest” bundle was curated by none other than our super awesome hosts, Yvonne @Quilting Jetgirl, Cheryl @Meadow Mist Designs and Stephanie @Late Night Quiter!

All of the new quilt blocks being created for the design challenge will be assembled together by magical quilting fairies (aka the blog hop hosts) and donated to charity! So, be sure to hop on over to the other blogs that are being featured this week (see the list at the end of this post) and check out all the wonderful new blocks – and maybe even make a few for yourself!

From Iris fabric, cut:

  • 1 square – 3 ½ x  3 ½
  • 1 square – 4 ½ x 4 ½ (cut to make 4 half-square triangles)

From Lilac fabric, cut:

  • 1 square – 5 ¼” x 5 ¼”
  • 4 rectangles – 2 ½” x 7″
  • 6 rectangles – 2 ½” x 5″
  • 1 square – 4 ½” x 4 ½” (cut to make 4 half-square triangles)
  • 1 square – 3 ⅜” x 3 ⅜” (cut to make 2 half-square triangles)

From Shadow fabric, cut:

  • 6 squares – 2 ½” x 2 ½”
  • 1 square – 3 ⅜” x 3 ⅜” (cut to make 2 half-square triangles)

From Amazon fabric, cut:

  • 4 squares – 2 ½” x 2 ½”

»Assembling the block:

Unfinished block: 12 ½” x 12 ½” (use a ¼” seam allowance)

1) To make the center diamond-in-square, cut the Lilac square diagonally twice, to create 4  quarter-square triangles

2) Sew two lilac triangles to opposite sides of the Iris square (fig. 1). Press the seams to the Lilac fabric (fig. 2). Repeat with remaining 2 triangles (fig.3)

3) Trim to 5″ square

5) Draw a diagonal line from the top inside corner of each Shadow square to the bottom outside corner. Sew along drawn lines. Trim the corners ¼” away from each seam (fig. 5). Press seams toward triangles (fig. 6)

6) Sew one 2 ½” square of Shadow fabric to each of the 2 ½” x 5″ Lilac rectangles, repeat step 5 to trim away corners (see pieces 1 & 2 in fig. 8)

7) To make two Lilac and Shadow half-square triangles (fig. 7) from your 3 ⅜” squares, refer to my previous HST tutorial here

7) To complete the 6 steps shown in in fig. 8, first sew your 2 ½” x 5″ rectangles to each side of center square. Sew together one of the 2 ½” HSTs to a 2 ½” x 7″ rectangle. Attach to the top – then do the same for bottom units to complete the square (fig. 9)

8) Sew one 2 ½” square of Amazon fabric to each of the 7″ x 2 ½” Lilac rectangles like you did in step 6

9) Draw a diagonal line from the top inside corner of each Shadow square to the bottom outside corner. Sew along drawn lines. Trim the corners ¼” away from each seam, as shown in fig. 5. Press seams toward triangles (fig. 10)

10) Repeat steps 8 & 9 for each of the 5″ x 2 ½” Lilac rectangles.

12) To complete the Raspberry Swirl block, assemble each set of 2 ½” squares, HSTs and 2 ½” x 5″ rectangles together, as shown in fig. 12 then sew both units to either side of your center square. Repeat for top and botton units to complete the block.

  1. Your block is dominant in the raspberry. One could also make one of the other colors dominate and it would be an entire different look!
