In just a few short months, the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild will be having their first ever Modern Quilt Showcase. Although I’m a brand new member to the guild, I’m almost a little embarrassed to admit that I’ve never been to an actual quilt show before. Still, even though I’m a total newbie and have no idea what to expect, I am ridiculously excited!
Quilt registration officially opened last month and while the more responsible of the members have probably already gotten their acts together and registered their amazing quilts by now, I’m still trying to decide what to enter. My anxiety is at full volume.
Here are the three I’m considering for the show (click to enlarge):
There will also be a separate Modern Mini Showcase. This will be a display of VMQG members’ mini quilts which will demonstrate characteristics of the modern quilting esthetic.
Wanting to make a modern mini quilt for the showcase, I dug through my fabric scraps to see what I could come up with. I originally planned on having a low-volume palette using my vintage floral scraps, but after doing some digging around, I found a few brighter florals I’d forgotten about.
I decided to make 9 small log cabin blocks. After cutting the florals into strips between 1-1.5 inches, I pieced them together and trimmed each finished block to 4.5 inches square.
Here’s a little sneak peek at a few of my teeny blocks. Tomorrow I hope to have them bordered, quilted and bound!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on which quilt(s) I should consider entering into the show! Are there any in particular that you would you choose over the others?

I was hoping you would decide to enter all three! I used to be bashful about entering quilts into shows, but I know how much I enjoy seeing other people’s quilts, so I figure we all need to share what we create. That way everyone can celebrate and enjoy them.

Choosing is always so tough, I usually struggle with choosing blocks orientation less an important decision as yours! OK if you can’t enter all 3 then I’d choose the vintage diamond and rustic star just because my eyes keep straying to them every time I look at them together which I believe is a good effect. They are all beautiful by the way and your picture presentation is just amazing 🙂

Oh man, toughest choice ever. I love all three but am drawn to the Improv Cross quilt. I really like the composition, how some of the crosses are muted and some are loud. I really love how you use your vintage linens and I think people may have a nostalgic connection to your work. I certainly remember floral sheets on my grandma’s bed.

The nostalgia is what first drew me to the vintage linens back when I started collecting them, but I never gave any thought to other people possibly having that same connection with my quilts. Such a lovely thought! Thank you for the encouraging words! ☺️❤️

Your little log cabin blocks are sweet using the pretty florals. How exciting to participate in your first show! I like all three of your quilts, and I especially love how they look together. Do you have a limit on how many you can enter? Maybe all three? Maybe I need to get my passport out and come to the show!

I don’t know which one I’d choose — they’re different and lovely in their own way, with their own emphasis. If I ask myself which one I — completely subjectively — am most drawn to, it’s probably Rustic Star. I love how geometric it is. The other two, though, have a wonderful softness to their design. I think it’s your clever use of florals.
Where do you find these gorgeous florals, by the way? They are exceptionally nice. I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ve done with them in the newest quilt!

Thank you and I agree that the Rustic Star Quilt has a much different feel in contrast to my mostly softer floral quilts. All my florals are vintage linens that I’ve found at thrift stores. I actually haven’t been thrifting in about 7 months and my stash is almost entirely depleted. There are many scrappy quilts in my future. 😉

It’s difficult to choose they are all so lovely. I think Vintage Diamond is my favourite.
