Vintage diamonds quilt {lavender, lilacs and a whole lotta lovely}

I was thrifting in Florida last summer when I came across this gorgeous set of Ralph Lauren floral pillow cases and perfectly coordinating lavender linens (all the heart eyes)! Part of me has been dying to use them in something… another part selfishly needs to keep them for petting purposes only. It’s been real hard, you guys.

Inspired by all the lilac and wisteria I’ve been seeing on my morning walks here in Vancouver, I finally decided to pull out my thrifted + hoarded lovelies along with some other fabrics from my stash – including a vintage white sheet with eyelet trim, which I also wanted to keep forever and ever.

I started sewing up blocks of half-square-triangles, settling on a nested diamond pattern. Here’s a photo of the pre-quilted top along side my best model. Check out those skills. 😂

For the back, I chose a dark gray fabric, also from my stash. I ended up not having enough for the entire back, so I improvised by sewing together some of my leftover HSTs in a flying geese-esque pattern and added more lavender at the bottom. I usually keep the backs solid, but I think I might start adding a little pattern detail more often (swoon).

Halfway through quilting, I noticed I was having some major tension issues. I ended up ripping out all the stitching using a method called quilt skinning before re-quilting it with a lighter weight bobbin thread (if you’ve never heard of quilt skinning, I wrote a post about it and included a video tutorial – you can see it here).

For the binding I went with more of the lavender, because I may have a slight addiction.

All finished and I gotta say things are looking all sorts of pretty over here. 😍💜

I’m having visions of recurring lavender in my future. And I’m not even mad. #purplepower
